Join us in ending gender-based violence!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we approach the end of the year and celebrate the holidays at home with loved ones, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to have a home. Every holiday season, the aroma of mint tea and the faint scent of rose water brings me back to the warmth of my grandmother’s embrace and reminds me of what a home should be – safe and nurturing. Home for me has been the many generations of immigrants living across the country, connected by a similar experience, who have supported me throughout my life. For many of us, home may not be one place, but a community of people. For me, Womankind is that community.

With 2021 nearly behind us, we reflect on what Womankind has accomplished in the face of multiple challenges: the pandemic, economic downturn, increased anti-Asian violence, and alarmingly high incidents of gender-based violence. I feel pride in the work staff has done to support survivors, some of whom have had to leave their unsafe homes with their children. Our work included:

  • Providing free culturally-humble counseling and other critical services such as access to our emergency residences (shelters)
  • Fielding thousands of helpline calls in 18+ Asian languages
  • Advocating for Asian and survivor communities in legislative spaces at the city, state, and federal levels on issues including increasing support for AAPI communities, additional access to housing entitlements and supporting legislation that allows for the disaggregation of demographic data for AAPI communities

I feel heartfelt gratitude for the extraordinary amount of love and generosity that Womankind received this year. It is humbling to have true friends and allies by our side as we work together to help courageous and resilient survivors rise above violence and build a path to healing. We vow to stay the course until all cycles of violence are broken.

As we welcome 2022, Womankind looks forward to celebrating a major milestone with you: 40 years of serving the community! We have big dreams we want to accomplish to deepen our work with families. Four decades of being on the frontlines of supporting survivors has taught us that our movement of ending gender-based violence has a place for everyone. Donate. Volunteer. Attend an event. Spread the word about Womankind on social media.

To old friends and new ones, happy holidays! I wish you much happiness, good health, and a wonderful new year. As always, if you or someone you know needs help, connect with Womankind here.

Thank you for being part of the Womankind community.

With a grateful heart,

Yasmeen Hamza

Womankind CEO
